What Florida asks for
  • Florida law requires every seller to file a Notice of Sale, so you are no longer liable for the vehicle.
  • You can file it with Form HSMV 82050, the state's Notice of Sale and/or Bill of Sale.
  • The seller completes the Transfer of Title by Seller section on the title: the buyer's name and address, the odometer reading, the selling price and the date sold.
  • The buyer completes an Application for Certificate of Title and submits it with the title to a motor vehicle service center.
  • The seller removes the license plate from the vehicle.
  • FLHSMV recommends keeping copies of the bill of sale and having it notarised.

The Florida notice is a seller duty, separate from this bill of sale. The state lists 30 days for it. Check the FLHSMV page for the current rule.

Florida sellers have one job that surprises many people: you must file a Notice of Sale. This page helps you write the bill of sale and reminds you of that step.

What it is

This is a general bill of sale for a car, light truck or van sold in Florida. Florida also has its own form, HSMV 82050, which works as a Notice of Sale and/or a bill of sale. You can use that form, or use this document as your own record and file the Notice of Sale separately. The title is what transfers ownership.

What to include

  • The date of the sale and the city or county in Florida where it took place.
  • The full legal names and addresses of the seller and the buyer, written the way they appear on each person's ID.
  • The year, make, model, body style and color of the car, so there is no doubt about which vehicle changed hands.
  • The full 17-character VIN, copied from the title and checked against the plate on the dashboard or door frame.
  • The odometer reading on the day of the sale and whether it shows the actual mileage.
  • The sale price, how it was paid and whether it was paid in full on the day.
  • Whether the car is sold as-is or with a warranty, and whether any loan or lien is still owed on it.
  • Signatures and dates from both people, plus a notary block if your county or the buyer asks for one.

How to fill it in

  1. Check that the seller's name matches the title.
  2. Enter the sale date and the price.
  3. Fill in both people's details, including the buyer's full address.
  4. Copy the VIN from the title.
  5. Enter the odometer reading and check the helper.
  6. Choose as is or a warranty, and answer the lien question.
  7. Check the preview, download the file, print two copies and sign.
  8. On the title, complete the Transfer of Title by Seller section.
  9. File the Notice of Sale and remove your plate.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping the Notice of Sale.
  • Leaving the selling price out of the title's transfer section.
  • Not removing the license plate.
  • Forgetting to print the buyer's name and address on the title.
  • Not keeping copies of everything you signed and filed.
