Bill of sale templates

A bill of sale is a simple record that something changed hands: who sold it, who bought it, what it is, the price and the date. Pick what you're selling and fill it in. If your state has its own rules, there is a page for it.

What are you selling?

Selling in one of these states?

Each state page covers that state's paperwork rules and links to the official form where one exists.

Before you sign

  1. Check the seller's name matches the title.
  2. Copy the VIN or hull number exactly as it appears on the title or registration.
  3. Record the odometer reading on the day of sale.
  4. Say whether the sale is as-is, and write down any warranty.
  5. Both people sign, and each keeps a copy.

Some states also ask for a notary or a specific form, which is why the state pages exist.

Questions people ask

Do I need a bill of sale to sell a car?

It depends on the state. Even where it isn't required, it is good evidence of the price, date and condition you agreed.

Does a bill of sale replace the title?

No. The title is what transfers ownership with the state. A bill of sale is supporting paperwork.

Does it need to be notarised?

Some states ask for it and many don't. Check your state's page or your local motor vehicle agency.

What does as-is mean?

The buyer accepts the item in its current condition and the seller isn't promising repairs afterward. Local consumer laws can still apply.
